As one of a series of collaboration programs between BEM Faculty of Humanities (FIB) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) and Airlangga Global Engagement (AGE UNAIR), the Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Humanity (BEM FIB), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), especially the Ministry of External Relations, held ILEN (International Literature and Extravaganza). This activity took place at Ternate Hall, ASEEC Building on Saturday (23/9/2023), and was attended by international students and local students. The theme of this talk show is Crossing The Boundaries, Unearthing The Power of Words. BEM FIB UNAIR presented Davyn Sudirdjo BA MS, founder of the startup Masa AI and alumnus of Stanford University.

Davyn mentioned that GPT Chat can be used to gain insight into topics of interest, plan and facilitate class discussions, and even create prompts for students to discuss.

However, on the other hand, Chat GPT also has disadvantages such as data limitations, making it less precise in providing up-to-date information. Ultimately, Chat GPT is just an algorithm that cannot be fully understood without explicit explanation.

According to Davyn, Chat GPT is not very good at this practice. The reason is that it requires a lot of resources, which means it requires so much computing power that it is not very good for the environment due to the large number of agreed missions.

In the presentation of the material, Davyn also explained that currently, Chat GPT is one of the AI tools that is operated according to the performance of the human brain to complete work or tasks. Some teachers use Chat GPT to create lesson materials.

“In my opinion, in terms of education, Chat GPT helps me in terms of research. For my thesis, I decided to try to frame my argument and research a particular topic. I use GPT Chat for a lot of things,” explains the Stanford University alumnus.

AI is essentially about personalization, Davyn continued, which makes things more interactive, and many inefficiencies can be resolved. Apart from education, the industrial sector is also being helped mentally by the use of AI on a large scale. But on the other hand, AI is also potentially at risk of being misused.

“If you talk about transformative AI, it will be very interesting, because transformative AI is when AI starts building other AIs, and that will be very scary. So I don’t know if it will happen in the next decade or two,” Davyn said.

At the end of the presentation, Davyn reminded us to remain vigilant with the use of AI and to verify the information provided.

“Although there are many benefits, there are many potential negative side effects of AI. Not only in Chat GPT but also in the creation of AI itself. So be aware of that. And whenever you Chat GPT or other AI tools, make sure to always verify the information they give you, and don’t trust it 100 percent,” Davyn said.

This activity also supports SDGS points 4 Quality Education and points 17 Partnership for The Goals.
